Mt. Carmel Municipal Golf Course is one of the finest municipal courses in the tri-state area of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. The current back nine was built in 1921. Originally began as the Cross Roads Country Club, the club closed during the depression. In 1935, the Country Club was started again - but operation of the course was turned over to the city when the pool project with the WPA began in 1936. In 1973, the "new" side, now the front side, opened and a new pro shop was opened in 1977. The pro shop sits at the entrance to the Mt. Carmel City Park and includes a pro-shop and snack bar. The Golf Course manager is Rick Bobbitt. The Greens Superintendent is Tim Woodsmall. The Mt. Carmel Municipal Golf Course is home of quite a few major tournaments during the year as well a good number of fundraisers for local charitable organizations.
